INITAL IDEAS
This my first freehand sketch of how the layout should be as well as my needs analysis.
PRISON LAYOUT
Final layout. The Salon in the visitor center is meant for proper bonding time with the women in the prison. The Library Building is for prisoner education. Kitchen and Commons have a classroom so that the inmates can learn and have a place of community. Greenhouse provides an outlet. Offices are meant to be there to aid with the prisoners and their cases.
DESIGN SKETCHES
This is an angled perspective view of the Multipurpose Room, or Delta BLDG. The roof has solar panels and skylights. This is a gym layout that will allow for different activities like meetings. Then there's an adjoining classroom building for trades.
HOUSING SKETCHES
This is housing sketches for apartments within the prison. The roof is Sloped. This meant to provide women a sense of community. Every floor will have a communal eating and shower area. Roughly 50 girls within a floor. Also meant for girls to explore outside since they will be able to roam around. The overall materials will be stone and brick, this is a more rustic feel rather than contemporary. This is because I want prisons to know that prison reform does not have to be expensive to remodel.
THE OVERALL IDEA
Architecture and engineering are needed aspects of our society. If we manage to go an extra step, these are key aspects to make a building that affects mental health. It may not seem glamorous at first, but it is essential. I believe that this is why I chose a prison. No one really wants to be responsible for constructing a prison, a place where supposed malevolent people occupy. However, if we use to design, we are able to change the way prisons act and perceived. These layouts are proven to decrease returning rates of inmates. Prison can be a place for rehabilitation and betterment rather than just a death sentence for being a functioning member of society. I want to make a difference through my designs as well as my engineer's point of view. I will make a difference.
